❀ Sharʿī Ruling on Watta Satta (Shighār) Marriage in Islam ❀

❖ Question

Is watta satta marriage — also known as nikāḥ shighār — permissible in Islam?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

According to Islamic teachings, watta satta marriage — i.e., nikāḥ shighār — is not permissible. Its prohibition is clearly established through authentic aḥādīth.

✿ Prohibition of Nikāḥ Shighār

◈ In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim it is narrated:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade nikāḥ shighār (exchange marriage)."
(Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Nikāḥ, Bāb al-Shighār)

◈ Some narrations also contain the words:
"There is no shighār in Islam."

✿ Statement of ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها)

In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah al-Ṣiddīqah (رضي الله عنها) said:
"Islam abolished all forms of jāhiliyyah marriages except the marriage that people practice today."

✅ Conclusion

In light of these clear evidences, it is absolutely established that nikāḥ shighār (watta satta marriage) is invalid and has no legitimacy in Sharīʿah.
