Question

We have placed boxes on poles so that sacred pages may be deposited in them to prevent disrespect. However, people also put entire old and worn-out copies of the Qur’an in them. Now we have a large collection. What should be done with these? Should they be buried? Some people throw them into dams.

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

✿ In this matter, I know of no Qur’anic verse or marfūʿ ḥadīth from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

✿ Clearly, such a method should be adopted for their preservation which is not contrary to the respect of the Qur’an.

✿ The honor and respect of the Qur’an is obligatory and necessary, while its dishonor is impermissible, ḥarām, and even tantamount to disbelief.
