Sharʿī Guidance on Holding a Second Congregation in the Same Mosque

Can Congregational Prayer Be Repeated in the Same Place? – Sharʿī Guidance

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Bāb al-Ṣalāh, Vol. 1, p. 161

Question:

It is often said that once prayer has been offered at a place or on a prayer mat, a second congregation cannot be held there, and for this reason people must change their spot—either move forward or backward—for the second prayer. Is this statement correct?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Allah Almighty says in the Qurʾān:

﴿وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ﴾
(Translation: Bow with those who bow).

This verse gives a general command to pray in congregation. It does not restrict the command only to the first congregation.

Likewise, the Prophet ﷺ said:

«صَلَاةُ الْجَمَاعَةِ تَفْضُلُ صَلَاةَ الْفَذِّ»
(Bukhārī: Kitāb al-Jamāʿah wa-l-Imāmah; Muslim: Kitāb al-Masājid, Bāb Faḍl Ṣalāt al-Jamāʿah)
"The congregational prayer is superior to the prayer offered individually."

This ḥadīth also describes the general virtue of praying in congregation, without restricting it to the first congregation only.

Leading a Second Congregation in the Imām’s Place:

The question arises: if, after the appointed (imām rāṭib) has led the prayer, another imām wishes to lead a second congregation in the mosque—can he stand in the exact same place of the first imām?

In this matter, the saying of the Prophet ﷺ should be remembered:

«وَلاَ يُجْلَسُ عَلٰى تَكْرِمَتِهِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ»
(Tirmidhī, Vol. 1, Abwāb al-Ṣalāh, Bāb Man Aḥaqqu bi-l-Imāmah, p. 55)
"Do not sit in a place of honor belonging to someone else except with his permission."

Based on this ḥadīth, it is inappropriate to stand in the designated place of the imām rāṭib without his permission. Hence, if a second congregation is to be held, it is better to either move slightly away from the imām’s spot or seek his consent.

Summary:

◈ The Qurʾān and ḥadīth give a general command for the virtue of congregational prayer, not restricted to the first congregation.
◈ A second congregation can be held in the same mosque.
◈ However, the imām rāṭib’s spot should be respected—no one should lead prayer from that place without his permission.
