The Punishment for Consuming Interest (Ribā)
Source: Fatāwā Amun Pūrī by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amun Pūrī
The Question
What is the punishment for consuming interest (ribā)?
The Answer
Consuming interest is destructive and ruinous. Allah ﷻ has declared ribā to be ḥarām. It is a major deadly sin (kabīrah muhlikah). Wealth obtained through interest is deprived of Allah’s blessings.
Warnings from Qur’an and Sunnah
❀ Interest is war against Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
﴿فَأْذَنُوا بِحَرْبٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ﴾
(Sūrah al-Baqarah: 279)
❀ On the Day of Resurrection, the consumer of interest will rise as insane or possessed.
(Sūrah al-Baqarah: 275)
❀ The consumer of interest is threatened with Hellfire.
(Sūrah al-Baqarah: 275)
❀ The Prophet ﷺ was shown people being punished in a river of blood for consuming interest.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1386)
Total Prohibition and Curse
- Taking interest, giving interest, recording it, witnessing it, or assisting in it in any way is ḥarām and accursed.
Sayyidunā Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh رضي الله عنه narrated:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who consumes interest, the one who pays it, the one who records it, and the two witnesses to it. And he said: They are all equal (in sin).”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1598)
Conclusion
- Ribā is among the gravest of major sins.
- It is a declaration of war against Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
- It leads to humiliation in this world and severe torment in the Hereafter.
- Every form of involvement in ribā — taking, giving, writing, or witnessing — is equally sinful.
