✦ Condemnation of Shirk in the Light of the Qur’an

◈ Shirk – The Greatest Injustice

Allah ﷻ mentions Luqman words in Qur'an:

[Sūrah Luqmān: 13]

“O my son, do not associate anything with Allah. Indeed, associating others with Him is a great injustice.”

Even though there are countless injustices occurring in this world, the gravest of all is to associate partners with Allah in His Essence or Attributes.

◈ Shirk – A Far-reaching Misguidance

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Nisāʾ: 116]

“Whoever associates partners with Allah has certainly gone far astray.”

◈ Mushrik – Impure and Filthy

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Tawbah: 28]

“Indeed, the polytheists are impure, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Ḥarām after this year.”

◈ Prohibition of Marriage with a Mushrik

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Baqarah: 221]

“Do not marry polytheist women until they believe… and do not marry (your women) to polytheist men until they believe.”

◈ Disobedience to Parents in Shirk

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-ʿAnkabūt: 8]

“If they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them.”

◈ Shirk – An Unforgivable Sin

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Nisāʾ: 116]

“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”

◈ Mushrik – A Blasphemer

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Nisāʾ: 48]

“Whoever associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.”

◈ Paradise Forbidden for the Mushrik

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Māʾidah: 72]

“Indeed, whoever associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and his abode is the Fire.”

◈ Forbidden to Seek Forgiveness for Mushriks

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Tawbah: 113]

“It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists…”

◈ Shirk Breeds Cowardice

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah Āl ʿImrān: 151]

“We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved for what they associated with Allah.”

◈ Shirk Leads to Punishment

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Fatḥ: 6]

“(Allah will) punish the hypocrite men and women and the polytheist men and women…”

◈ Shirk Nullifies All Deeds

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Anʿām: 88]

“If they had associated others with Allah, all that they were doing would have been worthless.”

And Allah addressed His Prophet ﷺ:

[Sūrah al-Zumar: 65]

“If you associate (with Allah), surely your deeds will become worthless…”

◈ The Tragic Fall of the Mushrik

Allah ﷻ said:

[Sūrah al-Ḥajj: 31]

“Whoever associates with Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky and birds snatch him away or the wind blows him to a distant place.”

◈ Ibrāhīm عليه السلام Rejected Their Shirk

Allah ﷻ quoted Ibrāhīm

[Sūrah al-Anʿām: 80–81]

“I do not fear those whom you associate with Him…”

✿ A Present-Day Analogy:

Just as polytheists of the past feared idols and saints, many today dread so-called saints or tomb-keepers, thinking misfortune would strike if they don’t offer vows or food in their names. This fear is a modern-day reflection of shirk.

✅ Conclusion:

Shirk is the gravest crime in Islam.
It leads to misguidance, impurity, hellfire, and the loss of all good deeds.
Even the Prophets would not have been spared had they committed shirk.
Thus, safeguarding Tawḥīd is the ultimate duty of every Muslim.
