❖ Question

What is the ruling on selling a ready crop by estimation?

❖ Answer

A ripe crop that is still standing in the field may be sold by careful estimation, and this is permissible. However, it is not permissible to sell the crop before the grain has fully developed.

❀ Ḥafiz Ibn al-Mulaqqin (رحمه الله, 804H) said:

بيع الثمر على رؤوس النخل إذا بدا صلاحه، بالذهب والفضة لا خلاف بين الأمة فى جوازه.

“The sale of fruit upon palm trees, once its ripeness becomes evident, in exchange for gold and silver, is permissible. There is no difference of opinion among the Ummah on this.”
(Al-Tawdih, 14/472)
