Self-Treatment for Magic or Envy (Hasad)

Authored by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

Can a Person Treat Magic or Envy by Themselves?

Yes, a person can treat themselves for afflictions related to magic (sihr) or envy (hasad). In fact, this is one of the primary objectives of Islamic teachings, as Islam encourages self-reliance in seeking solutions rather than constantly relying on intermediaries. A patient can remove the effects of magic or envy without the help of others, as the process depends on their faith, conviction, willingness, and patience.

Steps for Self-Treatment:

  1. Placing the Hand on the Affected Area:
    • Place your hand on the area where you feel pain or discomfort and recite:
« أذهب البأس رب الناس، اشف أنت الشافي، لا شفاء إلا شفاءك شفاء لا يغادر سقما »
“O Lord of the people, remove the harm. Heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves behind no trace of illness.”
(Sahih Bukhari 5351; Sahih Muslim 2191)
  2. Recitation of Supplications:
    • Recite “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah) three times.
    • Then recite the following supplication seven times:
« أعوذ بالله وقدرته من شر ما أجد وأحاذره »
“I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I find and fear.”
(Sahih Muslim 2202; Musnad Ahmad 4/217)
  3. Blowing on the Hands and Rubbing the Body:
    • Gather both hands, blow into them, and recite the following three Surahs:
      • Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112)
      • Surah Al-Falaq (Chapter 113)
      • Surah An-Nas (Chapter 114)
    • Rub your hands over your head, face, and as much of your body as possible.
    • Repeat this process three times. (Sahih Bukhari 11/125)
  4. Recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah:
    • Reciting Surah Al-Baqarahin its entirety is also an effective remedy for countering magic and envy. The Prophet ﷺ has said:
“Do not make your houses like graves. Satan flees from the house where Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Sahih Muslim 780)

Conclusion:

Islam emphasizes self-treatment through reliance on Allah’s words, patience, and sincere belief. The recitation of Quranic supplications and specific chapters provides powerful protection and healing. With faith and determination, one can successfully protect themselves from the effects of magic and envy without needing outside assistance.
