Self-Reliance Amid the Storm of Self-Interest in Society

Written by: Qari Usama bin Abdus Salam

Our society outwardly appears to be bound by ties of relationships, connections, goodwill, and ethics. Yet, when the tree of relationships faces the storms of reality, that is when one truly realizes who is genuine and who was merely there to enjoy its shade.

When a tree bears fruit, countless people come to water it, circle around it, and help themselves to its produce. But when that same tree is struck by a storm—its branches breaking, its leaves falling—everyone abandons it. At that moment, there is only one thing that prevents it from falling: its roots.

These roots, in a person’s life, are none other than faith, courage, self-confidence, and patience. As long as these inner roots remain strong, a person will not break or waver in the face of societal storms, betrayal in relationships, or worldly disloyalty.

One of the most bitter truths of our society today is that people approach you only out of self-interest. As long as you have something to offer, people surround you wrapped in the guise of politeness, sympathy, and affection. But the moment your pocket empties, your name fades, or your condition weakens, these “affections” grow cold, “friendships” lose their shine, and “relationships” reveal their true nature.

In such times, there remains only one true refuge: trust in oneself.

This trust cannot be bought from a market, nor can it be acquired from a social media post. It is built from experiences of pain, moments of solitude, enduring the truth, and rising again after mistakes.

If we wish to maintain our dignity, peace, and position in this self-serving, shallow, and selfish society, we must become our own support. We must cultivate within ourselves those strong roots that can keep us alive after every storm.

Remember—others will stand with you only as long as you are useful to their interests. But you will always have yourself—provided you have the certainty.

So, trust yourself, refine your character, and grow the roots within you that will never let you fall.
