Seeing the Prophet ﷺ in Dreams: Authentic Hadith, Conditions, and Misconceptions

Source: Fatāwā ‘Ilmiyyah, Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām, Vol. 2, p. 64

❖ The Question

If a person claims to have seen the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ in a dream—whether he narrates a dream containing some glad tidings or warnings that are clearly false, or simply claims to have seen the Prophet ﷺ in a dream—should his claim be confirmed? This is assuming the claimant is aware of the Prophet’s description from aḥādīth and describes him accordingly.

The ḥadīth often presented in this regard is:

"Whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me, for Shayṭān cannot take my form."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 6996, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2267/1)

And another narration states:

"Whoever sees me in a dream will soon see me while awake."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 6993, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2266/6)

There is also an incident narrated about a Companion who saw himself prostrating on the forehead of the Prophet ﷺ in a dream. When he informed the Prophet ﷺ, he replied:

"Fulfil your dream."
He then lay down, and the Companion prostrated on his forehead.

Since in our time it is not possible for anyone to see the Prophet ﷺ in wakefulness, some questions arise:

❖ Was the ḥadīth "Shayṭān cannot take my form" limited to the Prophet’s lifetime?
❖ Can Shayṭān now take a somewhat similar form to deceive people, especially since the full description of the Prophet ﷺ is mentioned in aḥādīth and, if given to three painters, each would produce slightly different portraits?
❖ If such deception is impossible, would someone who sees the Prophet ﷺ in a state of īmān be considered a Companion?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh. Ammā ba‘d:

It is indeed possible for a person to see the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ in a dream provided that he is seen in his true form.

◈ Since we do not possess any definitive standard to ascertain whether a claimant is truthful or mistaken in such a vision, we remain silent on the claim itself.
◈ However, if the dreamer is sound in creed and what he narrates does not contradict the Qur’ān or Sunnah, we do not object to his statement.

Meaning of the ḥadīth: "He will soon see me while awake"

This narration means:

◈ The person will see the Prophet ﷺ in Paradise.

And Allāh knows best.

Arab scholars have also clarified this:

"It is possible that what is meant is: he will see me on the Day of Resurrection, or it may mean he will see the interpretation of his dream."
(Fatāwā al-Lajnah al-Dā’imah li-al-Buḥūth al-‘Ilmiyyah wa-al-Iftā’, Vol. 2, p. 67)

Reality of Seeing in Wakefulness

◈ It must be remembered that in this world it is now impossible to see the Prophet ﷺ in wakefulness, and there is no proof to establish otherwise.
(See: Fatāwā Dār al-Iftā’ Saudi Arabia, Vol. 2, pp. 177–178)

Authenticity of the Ḥadīth about Prostrating on the Prophet’s Forehead

The narration you mentioned, wherein a Companion prostrated on the Prophet’s forehead after seeing it in a dream, is recorded by Imām Aḥmad:

(Musnad Aḥmad: 5/214, ḥadīth 21864)

◈ Its chain is authentic.
◈ There is supporting evidence in Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān (al-Iḥsān: 7105; another edition: 7149).
◈ Several other chains support this narration.
◈ Thus, this narration is not disturbed (muḍṭarib) but authentic.

(See: Aḍwā’ al-Maṣābīḥ, ḥadīth 4624)

Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله also graded this narration authentic:
(See: Hidāyat al-Ruwāt, 4/306, ḥadīth 4548)
