❖ Question

What do the scholars say about Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

Ṣāliḥ ibn Bashīr Abū Bishr al-Murrī is considered a weak narrator.

✿ Statement of Imām Ibn ʿAdī (رحمه الله, d. 365H)

“Most of his narrations, whether I mentioned them or not, are munkarāt (denounced reports) which the Imāms rejected. He was not a specialist in ḥadīth. He narrated munkar reports due to his lack of knowledge of chains and texts. In my view, he did not deliberately lie, but he made clear mistakes.”
(al-Kāmil fī Ḍuʿafāʾ al-Rijāl 5/98)

◈ Conclusion

  • Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī is a ḍaʿīf (weak) narrator.
  • His reports are mostly munkar due to lack of precision, though not deliberate fabrication.
