Question

What do the scholars say about Ḥusayn ibn Manṣūr al-Ḥallāj?

Answer

Ḥusayn ibn Manṣūr al-Ḥallāj (d. 309H) was a zindiq (heretic) and a ḥulūlī (one who believed in divine indwelling). The scholars of truth are unanimously agreed upon his disbelief and heresy.

  • His core belief was that Allah had indwelt everything.
  • He is regarded as the founder of the doctrine of Wahdat al-Wujūd (Unity of Being).
  • Due to his kufr and ilḥād, the scholars declared his execution lawful, and he was indeed executed.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله (728H) said:

هم متفقون على دم الحلاج وأمثاله
“The scholars are unanimous regarding the lawfulness of the blood of al-Ḥallāj and those like him.”
(Majmu‘ al-Fatawa 2/485)
