Clarified for Worship Etiquette and Respectful Conduct

❖ Question

Is it permissible to say "As-salāmu ʿalaykum" during the Adhān or when the Khaṭīb is delivering the Friday sermon?

❖ Answer

Yes, saying salām during either the Adhān or the Khutbah is permissible, and there is no Sharʿī prohibition against it.

➤ During the Khutbah:

  • Saying "As-salāmu ʿalaykum" does not disrupt the sermon.
  • The person listening to the khutbah may respond with a gesture rather than verbally.
  • This approach maintains respect for the khutbah while honoring Islamic etiquette.

➤ During the Adhān:

  • Saying salām and responding to it during the Adhān is not problematic, as there is no explicit prohibition.
  • The slow and spaced nature of the Adhān allows sufficient time to respond to both the Adhān and the salām.
🛑 However, avoiding unnecessary conversation during both the Adhān and Khutbah is preferable for maintaining spiritual focus and reverence.
