Saying “Allahu Akbar” Followed by “Astaghfirullah” After Salah

✿ Hadith Reference:

Narrated by Thawban (رضي الله عنه):
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would conclude his prayer, he would say ‘Astaghfirullah’ three times and then say:
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ، تَبَارَكْتَ ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
(O Allah! You are As-Salam (Peace), and from You is peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of majesty and honor).”

Imam Al-Awza’i was asked by Al-Walid, “How is the Istighfar said?”
He replied: "Say: Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah."

(Recorded by Muslim: 591, and Tirmidhi: 298, who graded it Hasan Sahih)

✿ Key Benefits & Lessons:

Post-Salah Adhkar Sequence:
After finishing Salah, one should first say “Allahu Akbar”, then recite “Astaghfirullah” three times, followed by the supplication:
“اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ...”.
This was the regular practice of the Prophet ﷺ.

Acknowledgment of Allah’s Attribute ‘As-Salam’:
The supplication affirms that peace and safety come only from Allah, the true source of all security and wellbeing.

Salam Is Not Directed to Allah:
Since Allah Himself is “As-Salam”, peace is not sent upon Him. Rather, He is the one who sends peace upon His slaves.

Usage of the Term “Allahumma”:
This word, frequently found in Prophetic supplications, enhances the beauty and effectiveness of the prayer, being a symbol of heartfelt invocation.

“Dhul-Jalali wal-Ikram” – Majestic Names of Allah:
These names describe Allah’s majesty and nobility, reminding us to revere Him in our speech and actions.

✿ Another Related Hadith:

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever says after each prayer:
  • 33 times Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)
  • 33 times Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah)
  • 33 times Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
and then completes it to 100 by saying:
Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr
(None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, who has no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom and all praise, and He is over all things capable),
    — then his sins will be forgiven, even if they are as much as the foam of the sea.”
(Muslim: 597)
