(Excerpt adapted from Shaykh Zubair ʿAlī Zaʾī’s book Hudiyyat al-Muslimīn – Namāz ke Aham Masāʾil maʿa Mukammal Namāz Nabawiyyah ﷺ)
From Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr رضي الله عنه:
"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said Āmīn aloud."
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 1/142, ḥadīth 933 – with ʿAwn al-Maʿbūd, 1/352)
Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar said regarding its chain:
“Its chain is ṣaḥīḥ.”
(Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr, 1/353)
① Evidence for Both Imām and Maqtadī
This and other aḥādīth prove that in audible prayers (jahriyyah), both the imām and the followers should say Āmīn aloud.
② Mutawātir Report
The ḥadīth of saying Āmīn aloud (Āmīn bil-jahr) is mutawātir.
(See Kitāb al-Awwal from al-Tamhīd of Imām Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj, p. 40)
③ The Sirran Āmīn Report is Weak
The narration mentioning saying Āmīn silently is weak due to Imām Shuʿbah’s error in it.
④ If Accepted as Authentic, It Refers to Sirrī Prayers
Even if the sirran version were accepted, it would apply to silent prayers, not to jahriyyah.
⑤ Practice of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr
From ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr رضي الله عنهما, Āmīn aloud is established.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 1/107, before ḥadīth 780)
No ṣaḥīḥ chain exists of any Companion opposing him. Hence, there is ijmāʿ of the Ṣaḥābah on the legitimacy of Āmīn bil-jahr.
⑥ Refutation of Misuse of Duʿāʾ Principle
Some say Āmīn is duʿāʾ and therefore should be said silently, citing the principle that duʿāʾ is to be made quietly. This is inconsistent, as the same people use loudspeakers for duʿāʾ at their gatherings, while objecting to Āmīn bil-jahr.
⑦ Clear Indication from Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
The ḥadīth in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim — “When the imām says Āmīn, then you say Āmīn” — is evidence for Āmīn bil-jahr.
See the chaptering in Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah (1/286, ḥadīth 569).
No muḥaddith ever derived Āmīn bil-sirr from it; they understood it as loud Āmīn.

Conclusion
- Āmīn bil-jahr in audible prayers is an established Sunnah from the Prophet ﷺ.
- It is to be said by both imām and maqtadī together after the imām finishes Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.
- This practice is supported by mutawātir reports and the consensus of the Companions.
