Saying Āmīn Aloud in Salah When Praying Alone

❀ Saying Āmīn Aloud by a Person Praying Alone: Views of the Fuqahāʼ ❀

(Excerpt from the book “Namāz mēn Ūnchī Āwāz se Āmīn Kahnā” by Muḥammad Muẓaffar al-Shīrāzī, translated by Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Razzāq Azhar)

◈ Ḥanafī Madhhab

The Ḥanafīs hold that a person praying alone (mutafarid) should say Āmīn quietly, not aloud.

Reference: Zayn al-Dīn al-Ḥanafī, al-Baḥr al-Rāʼiq Sharḥ Kanz al-Daqāʼiq 1/331

Their Proof:
They cite the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه:

Qāla Rasūlullāh ﷺ: “Idhā qāla aḥadukum fī al-ṣalāh Āmīn…”
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When one of you says Āmīn in ṣalāh …”

Reasoning:
Imām ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq رحمه الله stated: This narration includes the solitary worshipper, and the unrestricted wording applies both to silent and loud prayers. Thus, every worshipper is included.

Critique:
The deduction of the Ḥanafīs is weak, because the ḥadīth merely commands saying Āmīn, without specifying whether aloud or silent. Therefore, it is more appropriate to act according to the type of ṣalāh: in silent prayers, Āmīn is said quietly; in loud prayers, it is said aloud.

◈ Mālikī Madhhab

The Mālikīs also hold that a solitary worshipper says Āmīn quietly, not aloud.

Reference: Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Mālikī, Tanwīr al-Maqālah fī Ḥall Alfāẓ al-Risālah 2/37

Their Proof:
They argue that since Āmīn is a form of duʿāʼ, and the best manner of duʿāʼ is to recite it softly, therefore the solitary worshipper should say it quietly.

Critique:
This reasoning is answered by the fact that the Prophet ﷺ ordered the Imām to say Āmīn aloud, and by analogy, the solitary worshipper in loud prayers follows the same practice.

◈ Shāfiʿī and Ḥanbalī Madhhab

The Shāfiʿīs and Ḥanbalīs hold that a solitary worshipper should say Āmīn aloud in loud prayers.

  • al-Nawawī, al-Majmūʿ Sharḥ al-Muhadhdhab 3/331

  • Abū Isḥāq al-Ḥanbalī, al-Mubdiʿ Sharḥ al-Muqniʿ 1/440
  • Manṣūr al-Buhūtī, al-Rawḍ al-Murbiʿ 1/57

Their Proof:
They make qiyās (analogy) of the solitary worshipper with the Imām, stating that just as the Imām says Āmīn aloud in loud prayers, so should the one praying alone. According to the majority, this is sunnah.

◈ Preferred Opinion (Rājiḥ)

By Allah’s guidance, the stronger opinion is:

◈ When a solitary person prays a loud prayer, he should recite aloud and also say Āmīn aloud.
◈ When he prays a silent prayer, he should recite silently and also say Āmīn quietly.
