Rulings on the Salah of Women and Men

❀ No Difference Between Men's and Women's Salah ❀

There is no authentic Hadith establishing any difference in the method of Salah between men and women. The Prophet ﷺ issued a universal command:

"Pray as you have seen me praying."

This instruction applies equally to both men and women. The distinctions made by some scholars (such as the Ḥanafīs) regarding different postures for women are based on weak narrations and unreliable reports, and therefore not considered credible.

Statements of Prominent Scholars on the Uniformity of Salah:

Imām al-Bukhārī رحمه الله
Narrates with an authentic chain from Umm al-Dardāʾ رضي الله عنها:

إِنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَجْلِسُ فِي صَلَاتِهَا جِلْسَةَ الرَّجُلِ، وَكَانَتْ فَقِيهَةً
“She used to sit in prayer like a man, and she was a learned woman.”

📚 [Al-Tārīkh al-Ṣaghīr by al-Bukhārī: p. 90]

Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī رحمه الله
Said: “A woman will sit in Salah just like a man.”

📚 [Ibn Abī Shaybah: 1/270 – Authentic chain]

Ibn Ḥazm رحمه الله
Affirmed: “There is no difference between the Salah of a man and a woman.”

📚 [Al-Muḥallā: 3/37]

Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī رحمه الله
Said: “There is no difference in the raising of hands (Takbīr) between men and women.”

📚 [Fatḥ al-Bārī: 2/222]

Shams al-Ḥaqq ʿAẓīmābādī رحمه الله
Agreed with the position of no distinction.

📚 [ʿAwn al-Maʿbūd: 1/263]

Ibn Qudāmah رحمه الله
Stated: “In reality, the rulings of Salah for women are the same as those for men, except that it is recommended for a woman to draw herself inward during Rukūʿ and Sujūd.”

📚 [Al-Mughnī: 2/258]

Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله
Said: “The woman should also place her hands on her chest like a man.”

📚 [Sharḥ Muslim: 1/195]

Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله
Clearly stated: “There is no difference in any posture of Salah between men and women.”

📚 [Ṣifat Ṣalāt al-Nabī ﷺ: p. 189]

Clarification on Commonly Quoted Weak Narrations:

❌ The narration from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb which states that a woman should draw herself in during prostration and not be like a man is:

– Reported by Abū Dāwūd in al-Marāsīl,
– Declared Mursal, and thus not a valid proof, according to Shaykh al-Albānī.

📚 [Marāsīl Abī Dāwūd: p. 118; al-Ḍaʿīfah: 2654]

❌ The narration that Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما instructed his womenfolk to sit cross-legged in Salah is weak due to the presence of a weak narrator: ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar al-ʿUmrī.

📚 [Ṣifat Ṣalāt al-Nabī ﷺ by al-Albānī: p. 189]

✅ The Only Practical Difference:

The only difference acknowledged is not in the method of Salah, but in conditions of validity:

A woman must wear a head covering (khimār) during Salah — without it, her prayer is invalid.
For men, covering the head is not a condition for prayer.

This is a difference in prerequisites, not in the actual form or performance of the Salah.

📝 Conclusion:

✔ The method of Salah is identical for both men and women.
✔ Differences mentioned in some fiqh traditions are not substantiated by authentic Ahadith.
✔ Following the general instruction of the Prophet ﷺ is the safest and soundest approach.
