Rulings on Ta‘awwudh and Bismillah in Salah: Silent or Aloud?

🕋 Rulings on Ta‘awwudh and Bismillah in Salah
✍️ Derived from: Fatawa Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1

❖ Question:

Does omitting the loud recitation of Ta‘awwudh (A‘udhu billahi) and Bismillah (Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem) affect the validity of Salah? Provide evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah.

❖ Ruling on

Reciting “A‘udhu billahi min ash-shaytanir-rajim” aloud in Salah is not established from the Prophet ﷺ.

📌 Therefore:

Reciting it silently is the correct Sunnah.
Not reciting it aloud does not affect the validity of Salah.

❖ Ruling on

There are authentic narrations for both silent and loud recitation of Bismillah before Surah al-Fatihah:

✦ Silent Recitation:

🔹 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (RA):

"I prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman (RA), and none of them used to recite Bismillah aloud."
(Sahih Muslim)

✦ Loud Recitation:

🔹 Narrated by Nu‘aym al-Mujmir:

"I prayed behind Abu Hurairah (RA), and he recited Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem aloud, followed by Surah al-Fatihah."
(Sunan al-Nasa’i)

❖ Summary:

Ta‘awwudh: Must be recited silently. There is no basis for reciting it aloud in Salah.
Bismillah: Both silent and loud recitation are authentically reported from the Sunnah.
➤ Hence, both practices are valid, and either may be chosen.
