❀ Rulings Regarding Semen (Maniyy) in Light of the Qur’an and Hadith ❀
Written by: Qārī Usāmah bin ʿAbd al-Salām ḥafiẓahullāh
The Qur’an mentions maniyy (semen) in several places, especially in reference to the creation of mankind, highlighting it as a sign of Allah’s power.
Sūrah at-Ṭāriq (86:5–7)
"فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ (5) خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٍ دَافِقٍ (6) يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ ٱلصُّلْبِ وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ (7)"
Translation:
“So let man observe from what he was created. He was created from a gushing fluid that issues from between the loins and ribs.”
Sūrah al-Mursalāt (77:20–22)
"أَلَمْ نَخْلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءٍ مَّهِينٍ (20) فَجَعَلْنَٰهُ فِى قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ (21) إِلَىٰ قَدَرٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ (22)"
Translation:
“Did We not create you from a lowly fluid? Then We placed it in a secure place (the womb) for a determined period.”
Point:
These verses clearly state that human creation begins from maniyy, and it is one of the signs of Allah’s precise power and planning.
The ḥadīths of the Prophet ﷺ offer clarity on matters of purity (ṭahārah) and the obligation of ritual bathing (ghusl) related to maniyy.
Ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها:
She said:
"I used to scrape off dried semen from the garment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he would pray in it."
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 288, Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 227
Point:
This indicates that maniyy is not najis (impure); otherwise, mere scraping would not suffice.
However, if maniyy is still wet, it is better to wash it off.
1. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"If any of you experiences a wet dream and sees discharge (maniyy), then he must perform ghusl. If there is no discharge, then no ghusl is required."
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 343
2. Ḥadīth of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"When semen is emitted, ghusl becomes obligatory."
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 291, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 348
Point:
Whether during sleep or wakefulness, if maniyy exits the body, ghusl is wājib (obligatory).
However, mere arousal or feeling of desire without discharge does not necessitate ghusl.
① Maniyy is the fluid from which humans are created, and its mention is found repeatedly in the Qur’an.
② Emission of maniyy makes ghusl obligatory, regardless of how it occurred.
③ Dried maniyy may be removed by scraping, and this suffices; but if it is wet, washing is preferred.
④ Maniyy is not impure, yet it is recommended to cleanse its traces out of respect for cleanliness and worship.
These rulings are clearly established through the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. Should you need further clarification, feel free to ask.
