Ruling on Writing Qur'anic Verses on Drinking Utensils for Healing

❖ Islamic Ruling on Writing Qur'anic Verses on Eating and Drinking Utensils ❖

📚 Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

❖ Question:

Is it permissible to write Qur’anic verses—such as Āyat al-Kursī—on eating or drinking utensils for the purpose of healing?

✔ Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd!

❖ The Sanctity and Reverence of the Noble Qur’an:

◈ First and foremost, one must understand that the Qur’an is a sacred Book of Allah that deserves the utmost honor, reverence, and sanctity, free from all forms of disrespect or desecration.

◈ How can the heart of a true believer bear to see the greatest verse of the Qur’an—Āyat al-Kursī—inscribed on a vessel meant for drinking water?

◈ And then, such a vessel may be:
– Carelessly discarded in the house
– Played with by children
– Subjected to unintentional disrespect

❖ Ruling on Writing Verses on Utensils:

Without a doubt, this practice is ḥarām (prohibited).

◈ Whoever possesses utensils with Qur’anic verses inscribed upon them must:

Erase the verses from the utensils.

➋ Or take them to the manufacturer and request that they remove the inscription and recoat the item (e.g., through polishing or replating).

➌ If neither of the above is feasible, then it is obligatory to:

Dig a clean and pure place in the ground
Bury the vessels therein respectfully

❖ If the Vessels Remain in the Home:

If such vessels are kept in the home and are misused, for example:

➊ Children drink from them casually
➋ Play with them like toys

Then the risk of desecration increases, making the matter even more inappropriate and objectionable.

❖ Qur’an as a Means of Healing — Correct Method:

◈ Using the Qur’an as a means of healing (ruqyah) is established in Islam,
◈ However, writing Qur’anic verses on drinking utensils for healing purposes is not proven from the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥīn (the pious predecessors).
