Question

I work in a hospital where there is constant interaction with non-maḥram (unrelated) women, and it is necessary to communicate with them. What is the Sharʿī ruling regarding this?

Answer

Intermingling with women is impermissible, extremely destructive, and highly dangerous, especially when women are adorned and unveiled. This is because women who adorn themselves, apply makeup, wear perfume, and pass through gatherings of men are, according to Sharīʿah, described as immoral.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«أَيُّمَا امْرَأَةٍ اسْتَعْطَرَتْ فَمَرَّتْ عَلَى قَوْمٍ لِيَجِدُوا رِيحَهَا فَهِيَ زَانِيَةٌ»
“Any woman who applies perfume and then passes by people so that they may smell her fragrance is an adulteress.”

Similarly, women who apply perfume have also been forbidden from attending the night prayer.

Today, women have been introduced into hospitals, offices, universities, in fact almost every institution, where they move about among men while unveiled and wearing makeup. In Islam, such intermingling between men and women is ḥarām.

You should look for an alternative job where such evils are not present.

Parents should also ensure that they teach their daughters proper Islamic etiquette and make them adherent to Islam. They should not send them to such jobs that become a source of fitnah and push society towards destruction.
