Ruling on Working in Interest-Based Banks

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman Azmi (رحمه الله)

Question:

What is the ruling on working in banks that deal with interest (Riba), even if the job itself is not directly related to interest-based transactions? There are some banks that engage in Riba-based dealings and others that claim to operate on non-interest-based transactions. Employees in these banks receive salaries, which may come from permissible transactions rather than from prohibited ones. What is the ruling in this case?

Answer:

Even if an employee’s specific role does not directly involve interest-based transactions, they are still part of a system that promotes and sustains Riba (usury). These banks continue to operate because of their employees, and if people refused to work in them, such institutions would not be able to function.

By working in these banks, individuals contribute to the establishment and normalization of interest-based dealings, which are explicitly prohibited in Islam. May Allah protect us from such involvement.
