United Bank Job and Ruling on Interest-Free Partnership Banking

Taken from: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Masāʾil al-Buyūʿ, vol.1, p.389

❖ The Question

I am working as a manager in United Bank. Is my job Sharʿi-wise permissible, considering that I am responsible for supporting my family?
Also, is today’s so-called interest-free partnership banking (sharīkati accounts) permissible in Islam?

❖ The Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

1. Working in United Bank

  • Your current job in United Bank is completely impermissible and ḥarām according to Sharīʿah.
  • You must leave this employment at the earliest opportunity and seek a ḥalāl means of livelihood.
  • Place your trust in Allah ﷻ, for indeed He helps those who abandon ḥarām solely for His pleasure.

2. Interest-Free Partnership Banking

  • If you have a specific model or detailed system of so-called “interest-free partnership accounts,” then present it for review.
  • With Allah’s help, its Sharʿi ruling will be clarified in the light of Qur’an and Sunnah.

✅ Conclusion:

  • Employment in an interest-based bank such as United Bank is ḥarām.
  • Regarding modern interest-free partnership banking, a clear structure must be examined before issuing a verdict.
