Ruling on Women's Participation in Janazah (Funeral) Prayer

✿ Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori ✿

❀ Women's Participation in Janazah Prayer

Women are permitted to participate in the Janazah (funeral) prayer, but it is not permissible for them to accompany the funeral procession. This is evidenced by the narration from Hazrat Aishah (رضي الله عنها), who offered the Janazah prayer of Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (رضي الله عنه) in the mosque.

📚 [Muslim: 973, Kitab al-Jana’iz: Chapter on praying over the deceased in the mosque; Abu Dawud: 3189; Tirmidhi: 1033; Al-Nasa’i: 4/68; Ibn Majah: 1518; Muwatta: 1/229; Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar: 1/492]

According to Shaykh Ibn Baz (رحمه الله):
Women are allowed to participate in the Janazah prayer, but they should not accompany the funeral for burial, as this has been prohibited by the Prophet (ﷺ).

📚 [Al-Fatawa al-Islamiyyah: 2/18]

As narrated from Hazrat Umm ‘Atiyyah (رضي الله عنها):

نهينا عن اتباع الجنائز ولم يعزم علينا
“We (i.e., women) were prohibited from following the funeral procession, though the prohibition was not made emphatic.”

📚 [Bukhari: 63; Ibn Majah: 1/487; Ahmad: 6/408; Al-Bayhaqi: 4/77]
