Question:

Can a woman travel for Ḥajj or ʿUmrah without a mahram?

Answer:

A woman should not travel without a mahram.

Sayyiduna Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

لا يحل لامرأة تؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر أن تسافر مسيرة يوم وليلة ليس معها حرمة.

"It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel for a day and a night unless she has a mahram with her."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1088, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1339)

Therefore, if a woman does not have a mahram relative available, Ḥajj and ʿUmrah are not obligatory upon her.
