Ruling on Women Selling Their Hair in Islamic Law

Islamic Ruling on Women Selling Their Hair

❖ Question

Is it permissible for women to sell their hair?

Answer by Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir (حفظه الله)

In Islam, the buying and selling of human body parts is not permissible, and this principle also applies to human hair. Several key reasons are outlined below:

✿ Prohibition of Selling Human Body Parts

① The Human Body Is a Trust from Allah

◈ In Islam, the human body is considered a trust (amānah) from Allah. Therefore, selling or purchasing any part of it is not permissible.

✿ Risk of Use in Magic and Sorcery

② Hair Is Often Used in Black Magic

◈ Women's cut hair is frequently used in acts of sorcery and black magic, which poses a major Islamic and ethical concern.

Human Dignity and Honor

Islam Emphasizes the Sanctity of the Human Body

◈ Islam places immense value on human dignity and sanctity. For this reason, trading any part of the human body has been declared impermissible.

✿ Risk of Self-Harm

④ Causing Harm to Oneself Is Also Prohibited

◈ Islam prohibits self-inflicted harm. If individuals start selling parts of their bodies for financial gain, it may lead to damage to both health and dignity.

✔ Conclusion

It is not permissible for women to sell their hair in Islam. Doing so contradicts foundational Islamic principles such as the sanctity of the human body, the potential for misuse in sorcery, and the understanding that the body is a trust from Allah.
