Ruling on Women Praying with Niqab When Non-Mahrams Are Around

Ruling on Praying with Niqab in the Presence of Non-Mahram Men
Fatwa by: Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question:

Is it permissible for a woman to pray while wearing a niqab (face veil) in a hall or public area where non-mahram men are also present?

Answer:

There is a clear distinction between maḥārim (close male relatives) and non-maḥārim (strangers) in Islamic rulings.

If non-mahram men are present around her, such as in a hall or open space, then it is correct and preferable for the woman to offer her prayer while keeping her niqab on.

This practice preserves her modesty and is aligned with the principle of concealment (ḥijāb) required in the presence of non-maḥram men.

✅ Summary:

– In the presence of non-mahram men, a woman should perform ṣalāh with her niqab on.
– This is not only permissible but also recommended and proper in such circumstances.
– The concern here is maintaining modesty and avoiding exposure, not the standard ruling when alone or among maḥārim.
