Ruling on Women Offering Two Rakʿahs Before Sitting in the Mosque

Women Offering Two Rakʿahs Before Sitting in the Mosque

This excerpt is taken from Muhammad Ayyub Supra’s book Khawateen ka Masjid Namaz Mein Ba-Jamaat Parhne ka Mas’alah.

Hadith Evidence

Abū Qatādah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

إذا دخل أحدكم المسجد فلا يجلس حتى يصلي ركعتين

“When any one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit until he has prayed two rakʿahs.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 444)

Ruling

This hadith establishes the Sunnah of Taḥiyyat al-Masjid — the prayer offered upon entering the mosque before sitting — and it applies to both men and women.
Therefore, if a woman enters the mosque, she should also perform these two rakʿahs before sitting, unless she enters at a prohibited time for prayer (such as sunrise or sunset), in which case she may sit without praying.
