Ruling on Wiping Over Socks That Do Not Cover the Ankles

❀ Islamic Ruling on Wiping Over Ankle-Length Socks (Half Socks) ❀

❖ Question

Clarification is requested regarding the Sharʿī ruling on performing masḥ (wiping) over half socks.

❖ Answer by: Shaykh Dāʾūd Ismāʿīl (ḥafiẓahullāh) and Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir (ḥafiẓahullāh)

✿ Ruling on Wiping Over Half Socks:

If the socks cover the ankles entirely, then there is no harm in wiping over them.

However, if the ankles remain exposed, then according to the majority of scholars, it is not permissible to wipe over such socks.

✿ Difference of Opinion:

③ Some scholars have permitted wiping over half socks.

Nevertheless, the consensus of the majority (jumhūr) of scholars is that covering the ankles is a necessary condition for masḥ to be valid.

⑤ Therefore, as a matter of caution, it is better not to wipe over socks that do not cover the ankles.

❖ Conclusion:

For masḥ to be valid, the socks must cover the ankles.
Refraining from wiping over half socks is the more cautious and preferable practice.
