Ruling on Wearing Gold Earrings

Fatwa by: Former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him)

Question:

What is the ruling on wearing gold earrings?

Answer:

Based on the general command of Allah Almighty, it is permissible for women to wear gold, whether in the form of earrings or in any other form. Allah mentions in the Qur'an:

"Or is one brought up in ornaments and during conflict unable to make himself clear?"

[Surah Az-Zukhruf: 43:18]

In this verse, Allah describes jewelry as a characteristic of women, which applies to gold and other types of adornment.

Additionally, it is narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held silk and gold in his hands and said:

"These two are forbidden for the males of my Ummah."

[Musnad Ahmad]

In the version narrated by Ibn Majah, there is an added statement:

"...and lawful for its females."

[Musnad Ahmad, Sunan Abi Dawood, Sunan An-Nasai]

Furthermore, Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah and forbidden for its males."
[Musnad Ahmad, Sunan An-Nasai, Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Sunan Abi Dawood, Al-Mustadrak of Al-Hakim, At-Tabarani]

Thus, it is clear that gold, including in the form of earrings, is permissible for women to wear, while it remains prohibited for men.
