Fatwa by: Dar al-Ifta Committee
Question:
What is the ruling on using artificial hair, particularly when a woman uses it solely to appear more beautiful for her husband?
Answer:
It is encouraged and praiseworthy for a husband and wife to beautify themselves for each other in a manner that fosters mutual affection and strengthens their relationship. However, it is essential that all such beautification occurs within the boundaries set by Islamic law, without engaging in actions that violate Shariah.
The use of artificial hair is an innovation by non-Muslim women. Even if the purpose of using such hair is to beautify oneself for one's husband, it still constitutes imitation of non-believers. A Muslim woman wearing and adorning herself with such hair, even if only for her husband, is akin to resembling non-Muslim women. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has prohibited such imitation, as is evident from his statement:
"Whoever imitates a people is one of them."
(Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4031; and Ahmad, 2/50, 92)
Moreover, using artificial hair falls under the ruling of "attaching hair," which is a more severe issue, and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) strictly forbade this practice. He also invoked a curse upon those who engage in it.
