Source: Fatāwā Amunpūrī by Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Amunpūrī
❖ Question
Is it permissible to keep voluntary fasts during the days of Tashrīq?
❖ Answer
Voluntary fasting during the days of Tashrīq is not permissible.
❖ Evidence from Ḥadīth
The Prophet ﷺ said:
((أيام التشريق أيام أكل وشرب))
“The days of Tashrīq are days of eating and drinking.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1141
❖ Scholarly Consensus
◈ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597H):
((اتفق العلماء على أنه لا يجوز أن يتطوع بصومها))
“The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is not permissible to keep voluntary fasts during the days of Tashrīq.”
— Kashf al-Mushkil 2/131
❖ Related Ruling: ʿĪd Days
Just like the days of Tashrīq, voluntary fasting on the two days of ʿĪd is also prohibited.
◈ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597H):
((اتفق العلماء على أنه لا يجوز لأحد أن يتطوع بالصوم فى يومي العيد))
“The scholars are unanimously agreed that no one is allowed to fast voluntarily on the two days of ʿĪd.”
— Kashf al-Mushkil 3/128
Conclusion
- Fasting is prohibited on the days of Tashrīq (11th, 12th, 13th Dhul-Ḥijjah).
- Fasting on both ʿĪds is likewise forbidden by scholarly consensus.
