Ruling on Verbalizing the Intention (Niyyah) According to the Hanafis

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

According to the Hanafi school of thought, is verbalizing the intention (niyyah) for Salah considered obligatory (fard) or not?

❀ Answer:

✦ This question is best answered by the scholars of the Hanafi school.
However, according to authentic Islamic principles, we know that:

Verbalizing the intention is neither mandated by the Arabic language nor by Islamic Shari‘ah.

✿ Definition of Niyyah:

As defined in Fath al-Bārī:

"الإرادة المتوجهة نحو الفعل لابتغاء مرضاة الله وامتثال حكمه"

“Niyyah is the will directed toward an action, seeking the pleasure of Allah and the fulfillment of His command.”

This means that:

  • Niyyah is an act of the heart,
  • It involves inner resolve and intention, not spoken words.

✿ Key Clarification:

  • Intention originates from the heart, and that is sufficient for the validity of prayer.
  • There is no verse or authentic Hadith that requires or recommends speaking the intention aloud.
  • Saying it verbally is considered an innovation by many scholars, as it contradicts the pure practice of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions.

✔ Summary:

① In Shari‘ah, intention is an internal act of the heart, not of the tongue.
② There is no textual basis from Qur’an or Hadith for verbalizing the intention.
Consulting Hanafi sources will give their specific jurisprudential stance, but based on general Shar‘i principles, verbalizing niyyah is not obligatory.
Wallāhu Aʿlam.
