❖ Question:
Nowadays, many people use a stringed tasbih (prayer beads) after Salah. What is the Islamic ruling regarding this practice? Is it considered an innovation (bid‘ah) or not?
A blind scholar, who refers to himself as Hafiz al-Hadith, claims that Sayyidah ʿAʾishah رضي الله عنها used a tasbih with beads, referencing a narration from al-Daraqutni. He even challenges others by promising a reward if anyone proves the narration to be weak. A detailed explanation is requested.
(Question by: Abu Tahir Muhammadi, Khanewal)
① No Direct Proof for Today’s Beaded Tasbih:
There is no explicit proof known to me for the currently prevalent beaded tasbih.
✔ Therefore, it is better to avoid it, though not strictly prohibited.
② Indirect Justification Through Analogous Narrations:
Supporters of the permissibility rely on narrations where date pits or small stones were used for tasbih.
③ Supporting Hadith from Sunan Abi Dawood (1500):
A woman was using date pits or small pebbles for tasbih. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Shall I not inform you of something easier and more virtuous?"
Then he ﷺ taught her a supplication.
✔ The Prophet ﷺ did not prohibit her from using such items for tasbih.
④ Grading and Narrators:

⑤ Ruling on Using Other Counting Tools:
✔ Using tools other than fingers—such as counters, beads, etc.—for dhikr is permissible.
✔ However, counting on fingers is superior, based on Prophetic guidance.
⑥ The Narration Attributed to Daraqutni:
No such narration is currently known to me that explicitly mentions Sayyidah ʿAʾishah رضي الله عنها using a modern beaded tasbih.
Hence, no reliable basis for this claim can be confirmed.

⑦ Summary of the Hadith in Sunan Abi Dawood (1500):
A woman was doing tasbih on date pits or pebbles. The Prophet ﷺ taught her a better supplication but did not forbid the use of such physical counters.
✔ This hadith has been authenticated by:
⑧ Narrators of the Chain:
✔ All narrators are reliable and trustworthy (thiqat).
✔ The accusation of confusion (ikhtilat) against Saʿid ibn Abi Hilal is rejected.
✔ Scholars like Ibn Hibban, al-Tirmidhi, al-Dhahabi, and al-Diya al-Maqdisi have all affirmed the credibility of these narrators.
✔ Therefore, the statement of Ibn Hajar and others that “he is unknown (la yuʿraf)” is not valid in this context.
✔ There is no explicit proof for today’s stringed tasbih in the Prophet’s ﷺ time,
✔ But using date pits or pebbles for tasbih was known and not forbidden by the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ Hence, the use of **modern tasbih beads is not a bidʿah as long as it is used with sincerity and for the purpose of dhikr only.
✔ Nonetheless, the most virtuous method remains counting on one’s fingers as per the Sunnah.
