❖ Question:
Is using medicine in the eyes or ears during the day in Ramadan something that breaks the fast?
❖ Answer:
The correct opinion is that using eye drops or ear drops does not invalidate the fast, even though there is a difference of opinion among scholars on this matter. Some scholars hold that if the taste of the medicine reaches the throat, it would nullify the fast.
However, the stronger and correct view is that it does not invalidate the fast, because the eye is not a direct channel (manfadh) for food or drink.
If someone does experience the taste of the medicine in the throat, and chooses to make up the fast out of caution and to avoid scholarly disagreement, there is no harm in doing so. Nevertheless, the correct and reliable opinion remains that it does not break the fast, whether the medicine is used in the eyes or ears.
