Ruling on Using Madrasa Property for Personal Use

Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, vol. 1, p. 311

Question

If there is some property belonging to a madrasa, can a person working in the madrasa use that property for his personal needs?

Answer

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

◈ A madrasa employee may receive a salary from the madrasa funds when required. However, it is necessary that such payments be properly recorded in the madrasa’s accounting register with complete honesty.

◈ As for using madrasa property for personal use, it is not permissible in Sharīʿah. The reason is that such property is considered waqf lillāh (endowed to Allah), and it is never permissible to misuse or betray waqf property.

◈ If there arises a need to use any madrasa item, then its full rent or value must be paid back into the madrasa account.
