Ruling on Using Excess Water During Ghusl Janābah

Taken from: "Ahkām wa Masā’il in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

If a person mistakenly pours four handfuls of water over his head during ghusl janābah instead of the Sunnah three, and remembers afterward — is his ghusl valid, or does he need to repeat it?

❀ Answer:

The ghusl is valid. There is no need to repeat it.
Mistakenly exceeding the prescribed number does not invalidate the act of purification.

❖ Supporting Hadith:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"My Ummah is excused for what they do out of forgetfulness, error, or under compulsion."
(Ibn Mājah, Kitāb al-Ṭalāq, Bāb al-Ṭalāq al-Makrūh wa al-Nāsī;
Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ, Kitāb al-Manāqib, Bāb Thawāb Hādhihi al-Ummah, al-Faṣl al-Thālith)

❀ Summary:

✔ Pouring an extra handful of water by mistake does not affect the validity of ghusl janābah.
✔ However, one should be mindful to follow the Sunnah and avoid unnecessary excess.
