Source: Fatāwā Arkan-e-Islam

✦ The Question

What is the Islamic ruling regarding the use of perfumes and fragrances by a fasting person during Ramadan?

✦ The Shar‘i Verdict

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

✔ It is permissible for a fasting person to apply or smell perfumes and fragrances during the daytime in Ramadan. There is no harm in doing so.

✦ Details and Clarification

Perfumes, attar, body sprays, scented oils, etc.:
◈ Applying and smelling these does not invalidate the fast.
◈ They are not considered food or drink, nor do they reach the stomach through normal means.

Incense (Bakhoor, Agarbatī, Lubān, etc.):
✘ It is better to avoid inhaling incense smoke while fasting, because:

◈ The smoke may contain particles that could enter the stomach through the respiratory tract.
◈ This could potentially affect the validity of the fast.

✔ Conclusion:

✅ Using perfumes and fragrances is allowed during fasting.
Avoid intentionally inhaling incense smoke like bakhoor or agarbatī during the fast.
⚠ Caution in such matters ensures that the fast remains intact and free from doubt.
