When praying inside a mosque, should a person place a sutrah (barrier) in front of them or not?
✦ Yes, a person should place a sutrah in front of them while praying in the mosque, just as they would outside.
The Shar‘i evidences that describe the sin of passing in front of someone praying do not differentiate between mosque or non-mosque settings.
Similarly, the narrations that mention no sin in passing beyond a sutrah do not limit this to only outdoor locations.
The absence of any such distinction in the Qur’an or Sunnah means the command is general:
① Placing a sutrah while praying in the mosque is in accordance with the Sunnah.
② There is no distinction in Shari‘ah between mosque and non-mosque settings for this ruling.
③ To prevent others from incurring sin by walking in front of the praying person, a sutrah should be used.

❀ Question:
When praying inside a mosque, should a person place a sutrah (barrier) in front of them or not?
❀ Answer:
✦ Yes, a person should place a sutrah in front of them while praying in the mosque, just as they would outside.
The Shar‘i evidences that describe the sin of passing in front of someone praying do not differentiate between mosque or non-mosque settings.
Similarly, the narrations that mention no sin in passing beyond a sutrah do not limit this to only outdoor locations.
✿ Logical Implication of the Texts:
The absence of any such distinction in the Qur’an or Sunnah means the command is general:
- A person praying should avoid others crossing in front of them by using a sutrah.
- The only exception is if the crossing occurs beyond the sutrah—in which case, there is no sin.
✿ Practical Guidance:
- In the mosque, the praying person should try to stand near a wall or pillar to serve as a sutrah.
- If that is not possible, they should place any object—such as a stick, bag, or chair—as a sutrah to mark their prayer space.
✔ Summary:
① Placing a sutrah while praying in the mosque is in accordance with the Sunnah.
② There is no distinction in Shari‘ah between mosque and non-mosque settings for this ruling.
③ To prevent others from incurring sin by walking in front of the praying person, a sutrah should be used.
