Ruling on Urinating While Standing

Taken from: "Ahkām wa Masā’il in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

Is urinating while standing prohibited in Islam?
It is reported that ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) said:

“If anyone says that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to urinate while standing, do not believe him. He always urinated while sitting.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Abwāb al-Ṭahārah, Bāb al-Nahy ʿan al-Bawl Qāʾiman)

❀ Answer:

There is no contradiction between the statements of ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) and Ḥudhayfah (رضي الله عنه) — each of them narrated what they personally observed.

◈ ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) stated:

“Whoever says that the Prophet ﷺ urinated standing, do not believe him. He always urinated sitting.”
This reflects her own observation and what she usually witnessed.

◈ On the other hand, Ḥudhayfah (رضي الله عنه) narrated:

“The Prophet ﷺ came to a garbage dump of some people and urinated while standing.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1/35]

✔ Explanation:

◉ The hadith of Ḥudhayfah confirms that on some occasions, the Prophet ﷺ did urinate standing, especially when the place or situation necessitated it — such as a dirty or impure area.
◉ However, the general and preferred practice of the Prophet ﷺ was to urinate while sitting, as noted by ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها).
◉ Thus, both narrations are authentic and represent different circumstances, and there is no contradiction.

❀ Summary:

It is permissible to urinate while standing when needed, but
the better and more modest way — as generally practiced by the Prophet ﷺ — is to sit while urinating.
