Ruling on Unequal Exchange When the Commodities are Different

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman Azmi (رحمه الله)

If the types of commodities being exchanged are different, then there is no prohibition on exchanging them with an increase or decrease in quantity, as long as the transaction is conducted on the spot (hand-to-hand, without delay).

This ruling is based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:
"When these types (commodities) are different, then sell as you wish, as long as the exchange is hand-to-hand (immediate)."
