In the Qur’ān, those who call ʿĪsā (Jesus) عليه السلام “Allah” have been declared disbelievers (kuffār).
So if one calls ʿĪsā عليه السلام “Allah” and is deemed a disbeliever, then why wouldn’t the same ruling apply to those who call Muḥammad ﷺ “Allah”?
If a person truly believes that any prophet, saint (walī), angel, or jinn—besides Allah—is Allah or their Lord, then:
✔ Such a belief constitutes clear disbelief (kufr)
based on the explicit meaning of the Qur’ānic verse, which leaves no room for interpretation or taʾwīl.
❖ The verse referenced:
﴿لَّقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ﴾
“They have certainly disbelieved who say, ‘Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary.’”
(Surah al-Māʾidah, 5:17)
✔ Hence, the same applies to anyone who says about the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ that he is Allah.
However:
① Declaring someone a disbeliever (kāfir) is a serious legal ruling in Islam.
② It is not permissible for common people to issue such a judgment.
③ This is the responsibility of qualified scholars who will:
– Conduct a complete investigation into the individual’s belief and statement.
– Consider all preconditions (shurūṭ) and preventive factors (mawāniʿ) before issuing a fatwā of takfīr.
Conclusion:

- Believing a prophet or any creation to be Allah is clear kufr.
- But issuing the label of kāfir on someone is a scholarly responsibility, not to be handled by laypersons.
