Is Prayer Valid Behind a Sinful Imām?
Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Bāb al-Ṣalāh, Vol. 1, p. 159
Question:
Is the prayer valid behind an imām who lies, backbites, indulges in slander, breaks promises, creates discord among brothers, abandons his own congregation to prefer others, and smokes cigarettes?
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
Yes, the prayer offered behind such an imām is valid. Sharīʿah has not declared the imāmah of a sinful person completely void, even though his habits and actions are condemnable and sinful.
However, it is the duty of the congregation to advise such an imām sincerely and with kindness, encouraging him to refrain from these wrongdoings so that he may reform himself.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
«اَلدِّیْنُ النَّصِیْحَةُ»
(Muslim, Kitāb al-Īmān, Bāb Bayān Anna al-Dīn al-Naṣīḥah)
“Religion is sincere advice.”
This means that the true spirit of dīn lies in sincerity, goodwill, and striving for rectification. Therefore, a Muslim should sincerely counsel even his imām or religious leader, aiming for his reformation, instead of adopting mere criticism or aversion.
Hādhā mā ʿindī, wallāhu aʿlam bi-ṣ-ṣawāb.
