Ruling on the Use of a Dead Edible Animal's Hide After Tanning

Source: Fatāwā ʿUlamāʾ-e-Ahl-e-Ḥadīth, Kitāb al-Ṭahārah, Volume 1, Page 28

❖ Question

Is it permissible to benefit from the hide of a dead edible animal after tanning? If it is permissible, does that include buying and selling, using it for buckets, bedding, etc.?

❖ Answer

It is permissible to benefit from the hide of a dead edible animal after it has been tanned. However, this permission applies to all types of use except consumption (eating). Examples include:

✔ Buying and selling (بیع و شراء)
✔ Making water buckets (ڈول)
✔ Preparing bedding (بستر)
✔ Other lawful purposes (دیگر جائز مقاصد)

❖ Sharʿi Evidence

① Ḥadīth:
عن عبد اللّٰہ بن عباس قال سمعت رسول اللّٰہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم یقول: اِذَا دُبِغَ الْإِهَابُ فَقَدْ طَهُرَ

(Narrated by Muslim)

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (RA) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say, “When a hide is tanned, it becomes pure.”

② Another Ḥadīth:
Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (RA):
A goat given in charity to a slave woman died. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “Why did you not take its hide, tan it, and benefit from it?”
They replied, “It had died.”
He ﷺ said, “Tanning it makes it pure.”
(Narrated by Bukhārī, Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ)

❖ Summary

The hide of a dead edible animal becomes pure after tanning.
It is then permissible to benefit from it in every way except eating.
Examples include:
❖ Buying and selling
❖ Making water buckets
❖ Bedding preparation
❖ Other lawful uses
