Ruling on the Trade of Tobacco and Cigarettes

Source: Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur'an and Hadith, Volume 02

❖ Islamic Ruling on the Trade of Tobacco and Cigarettes

Indeed, the trade of tobacco, cigarettes, and other harmful substances of this nature is haram (prohibited), just as their consumption is haram. The reason for this is that tobacco and cigarettes are harmful to health and lead to both physical and financial damage. Therefore, their usage is prohibited in Islamic Shari'ah.

In the Holy Qur’an, Allah Almighty has forbidden aiding in sin and transgression:

"And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression." (Surah Al-Ma’idah: 2)

Based on this principle, the trade of prohibited items is also haram, as it contributes to leading others into sin. Just as the trader of alcohol shares in the sin of its consumption, likewise, the one who trades in tobacco and cigarettes is considered a participant in the sin of their use.

❖ Summary

The consumption of tobacco and cigarettes is haram.

Their trade is also haram, because it contributes to the promotion of sinful and harmful items.

The Qur’an prohibits cooperation in sinful and oppressive acts, and based on this principle, such trade is forbidden.
