Ruling on the Number of Rakʿahs When Making Up Missed Prayers (Qaḍāʾ al-Ṣalāh)

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

If a person performs the Dhuhr prayer after the Adhan of ʿAsr, should he pray four rakʿahs or only two? Similarly, if someone performs both Dhuhr and ʿAsr after Maghrib, should each be prayed as four rakʿahs or two? What if someone habitually prays multiple prayers together—should they perform full rakʿahs for each or shorten them?

❀ Answer:

✦ It is not permissible to intentionally delay the prayer past its prescribed time due to work or other non-Shar‘i reasons.
Allah ﷻ says:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا

(Surah al-Nisa: 103)
"Indeed, the prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed times."

Prayer is a time-bound obligation, and deliberately neglecting it without a valid excuse is a serious sin.

✿ Combining Prayers During Travel:

In travel, it is permissible to combine Dhuhr with ʿAsr, and Maghrib with ʿIsha, either as Jamʿ Taqdīm (early) or Jamʿ Ta’khīr (delayed).
This is based on authentic narrations from the Prophet ﷺ.

✿ Combining in Residence (Ḥaḍar):

In non-travel (ḥaḍar) situations:

  • Combining (Jamʿ Taqdīm or Ta’khīr) is not proven.
  • Only Jamʿ Ṣūrī (apparent combining) is occasionally acceptable under valid hardship.

✿ Ruling on Missed Prayers (Qaḍāʾ):

If a person misses a prayer and is residing (not traveling), then the full prayer must be made up, just as it would have been performed at its time.
This includes:

  • All four rakʿahs for Dhuhr, ʿAsr, and ʿIsha,
  • Three rakʿahs for Maghrib,
  • Two rakʿahs for Fajr,
  • Along with their respective sunan and nawafil where applicable.

There is no shortening (qasr) for prayers in residence, even if made up later.

✦ Important Clarification:

A person who habitually combines prayers inappropriately due to laziness or routine work is committing a major violation. Only in cases of extreme necessity or hardship, occasional combination or delay might be excused, but this should not become a habit.

✔ Summary:

Qaḍāʾ prayers must be performed in full as per their original form if the person is not traveling.
Shortening or reducing rakʿahs is not allowed in residence.
Combining prayers habitually in residence is forbidden and a major sin, except under rare necessity.
Wallāhu Aʿlam.
