Ruling on Teaching Qur’an to a Fiancée in Person

❀ Ruling on a Man Visiting His Fiancée to Teach Her Qur’an ❀
This fatwa is taken from the book “500 Questions and Answers for Women,” based on the rulings of the scholars of the Ḥaramayn and translated by Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbdullāh Salīm.

❖ Question:

I have been engaged to a woman, and by the grace of Allah, I have helped her memorize 20 Juz of the Noble Qur’an during our engagement period. I sit with her in the presence of her maḥram, and she strictly observes proper Sharʿī ḥijāb. Alḥamdulillāh, our gatherings are solely for religious discussion or Qur’anic recitation, and the meeting duration is short. Is our meeting Islamically impermissible?

❖ Answer:

This is not appropriate or recommended, because the awareness that the woman sitting in front of him is his fiancée will likely stir his desire. And it is unlawful to arouse desire for anyone other than one’s wife or owned bondwoman (which is now abolished).

That which leads to the ḥarām is also ḥarām. Therefore, although the intention may be noble, the setting and emotional proximity pose a risk of falling into what is prohibited.
