Ruling on Tayammum in the Absence of Water

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

◈ Question:

If a person performs tayammum due to the absence of water and begins the prayer, then water becomes available during the prayer, what is the ruling?

◈ Answer:

When water is not available, or its use is not possible, tayammum is legislated. Through tayammum, full purification is attained. In such a case, if a person performs tayammum and begins the prayer, and during the prayer water becomes available, he should continue his prayer. His prayer is valid by consensus.

❀ Statement of the Scholars

Imam al-Ghazālī رحمه الله (505 AH):
“If a person who has performed tayammum sees water during the prayer, he should continue the prayer, because there is consensus on the validity of his prayer and its continuation even after seeing water.”
(المستصفى: 160)

✅ Conclusion:
If a person begins prayer with tayammum due to the absence of water, and water becomes available during the prayer, he should not break his prayer. His prayer remains valid by scholarly consensus.
