Ruling on Talbiyah, Tawaf al-Qudoom, and Tawaf al-Ifadah for a Woman in Istihādah

Source: Ahkam wa Masail, Chapter on Ghusl, Vol. 1, p. 93

Question:

Should a woman experiencing istihādah (non-menstrual abnormal bleeding) recite the talbiyah? If she misses Tawaf al-Qudoom, will Tawaf al-Ifadah suffice, or must she later perform Tawaf al-Qudoom?

Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd:

  • A woman in istihādah is considered ritually pure (tāhirah) in Islamic law.
  • She should recite the talbiyah and perform all the rites of Hajj except tawaf while bleeding.
  • If she was in menstruation (hayd) and could not perform Tawaf al-Qudoom, there is no problem.
  • In such a case, only Tawaf al-Ifadah is required, and Tawaf al-Qudoom does not need to be performed later.

Evidence from Hadith:

ʿĀ’ishah (RA) narrated:

"We set out with the Prophet ﷺ for Hajj, and when we reached Sarif, I began menstruating. The Prophet ﷺ said:
«فَافْعَلِي مَا يَفْعَلُ الْحَاجُّ غَيْرَ أَنْ لَا تَطُوفِي بِالْبَيْتِ حَتَّى تَطْهُرِي»
‘Do what the pilgrim does, except do not perform tawaf around the House until you are pure.’
(Agreed upon – Mishkat 2/561)

Conclusion:

  • A woman in istihādah performs all Hajj rites, including talbiyah, like any other pilgrim.
  • Missing Tawaf al-Qudoom due to menstruation does not require later performance; Tawaf al-Ifadah suffices.
