What is the Sharʿi ruling on supplicating through the Prophet ﷺ?
(Asked by: A Sister, Tando Adam, Sindh)
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾammā baʿd!
① No Evidence in Qur’an or Authentic Sunnah:
◈ There is no evidence from the Qur’an or authentic Hadiths that supports making duʿāʾ through the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ.
◈ Therefore, making duʿāʾ through the Prophet ﷺ is an innovation (bidʿah).
② Context of the Hadith:
◈ The narration attributed to ʿUthmān ibn Ḥunayf رضي الله عنه refers to a living person during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime.
◈ The Prophet ﷺ himself promised to make duʿāʾ for the man.
◈ No authentic Hadith shows that duʿāʾ was made through the Prophet ﷺ after his passing.
③ Practice of the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥīn:
◈ The Companions, Tābiʿīn, and Tabaʿ Tabiʿīn never made duʿāʾ through the Prophet ﷺ after his demise.
◈ All of them supplicated directly to Allah, without invoking intermediaries.
◈ Hence, Muslims must also supplicate directly to Allah, following the guidance of the pious predecessors.
④ Common Misconception:
◈ Some individuals cite a narration from al-Ṭabarānī in which ʿUthmān ibn Ḥunayf رضي الله عنه is reported to have made duʿāʾ through the Prophet ﷺ after his death.
◈ However, the chain of this narration is weak (ḍaʿīf) and cannot be used as reliable evidence.

✔ There is no valid evidence from Qur’an or authentic Sunnah to support supplicating through the Prophet ﷺ after his death.
✔ The practice is not found among the Companions or the early generations of Islam.
✔ Therefore, making duʿāʾ through the Prophet ﷺ after his demise is a rejected innovation (bidʿah).
✔ A Muslim must make duʿāʾ directly to Allah alone, without using any intermediaries.
