Ruling on Making Du‘ā’ During Recitation in Prayer When Jannah or Jahannam Are Mentioned
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām
Is it permissible for a worshipper during recitation in prayer to supplicate when Jannah (Paradise) is mentioned and seek refuge when Jahannam (Hellfire) is mentioned?
Is there any difference in this ruling between the imām, the follower (muqtadī), and the one praying alone (munfarid)?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d:
Yes, this is permissible.
The only condition for the muqtadī is that:
هٰذا ما عندي والله أعلم بالصواب

Question
Is it permissible for a worshipper during recitation in prayer to supplicate when Jannah (Paradise) is mentioned and seek refuge when Jahannam (Hellfire) is mentioned?
Is there any difference in this ruling between the imām, the follower (muqtadī), and the one praying alone (munfarid)?
Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d:
Yes, this is permissible.
- It is completely correct for the worshipper, during recitation, to ask Allah for Jannah when its mention occurs, and to seek refuge from the Fire when Jahannam is mentioned.
- This ruling is the same for the imām, the munfarid, and the muqtadī.
Condition for the Muqtadī
The only condition for the muqtadī is that:
- His supplication or seeking refuge should not distract him from maintaining the silence required during the imām’s recitation.
- He must ensure the silence that is prescribed while listening to the imām’s recitation.
هٰذا ما عندي والله أعلم بالصواب
